AGAT testing

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Prior to the commencement of the 2018 school year, all Year 7 2018 students will undertake the Australian Council for Educational Research General Ability Test (AGAT) at John Paul College as part of the Year 7 transition process. The AGAT is one measure of the student’s general reasoning ability in three areas: verbal, numerical and abstract.

The College will use AGAT results as one means of identifying your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. No student is assessed as passing or failing the test and so it should not be a cause for worry or anxiety. The test is not seen as a conclusive statement of your child’s ability. Your child has an extensive amount of information that has been gathered over a long period of time at his/her primary school. It is this information that we value greatly as it provides a more comprehensive profile of skills, abilities and needs. All this information, when combined with enrolment interviews assists us to prepare for your child’s learning and wellbeing at John Paul College.

In collaboration with partner primary schools, a one hour sitting is required for your child to sit the test on Wednesday 11 October 2017 or Thursday 12 October 2017 between 2pm and 6pm. In order to make a booking for your preferred one hour time slot, we are using an internet-based booking system called Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO). By using this system you will be able to book the one hour AGAT sitting that best suits you and your child from any internet connected computer.

To book your preferred testing time access PTO as follows:

  • Go to:
  • Scroll down and click the button ‘Click here to make a booking’
  • Enter Username and Password
  • USERNAME: Beall
  • PASSWORD: 32575
  • Please select one of the testing sessions
  • Print a report of your booking and keep for further reference.

Full instructions are provided to you after log in. When timeslots are fully booked they will no longer be displayed as available. It is advisable that bookings are scheduled as soon as possible. The PTO Booking System will open Wednesday 6 September 2017 3pm and close Friday 22 September 2017 3pm. For those parents who are unable to access a computer or should you encounter any problems please ring the College Receptionist 9784 0200 to arrange interviews.

Students will sit the test in Room D1. Students are to meet at Main Reception 10 minutes prior to commencement. A staff member will then walk the group of students to Room D1. Parents are also welcome to wait in the Resource Centre Multi Media Room to share coffee or tea and meet other parents, JPC students and staff. If you do not wish to wait for your child, please collect him/her at Main Reception at the end of the one hour booking.

All Year 7 2018 students are expected to sit the test on 11 or 12 October unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please note, your child is no longer required to attend on a Saturday morning to sit the diagnostic tests as in previous years. Your child will sit the remaining ACER tests at the commencement of Year 7. If there is an unavoidable reason your child can not attend, please call the College on 9784 0200 before 22 September 2017.

We look forward to meeting you and your child on Wednesday 11 October 2017 or Thursday 12 October 2017 as part of the John Paul College Year 7 transition process.

Yours sincerely

Lynette Helisma
Deputy Principal
